GOVERNOR LINGLE ENACTS LAWS TO ENHANCE STATE’S EMERGENCY DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
May 22, 2006
HONOLULU Governor Linda Lingle today signed bills that will improve Hawai`i’s ability to prepare for natural and man-made disasters.
Recognizing that many people understandably consider their pets to be part of their family and may be reluctant to leave their animals unattended during an emergency, HB3121 HD2 SD1 CD1 (Act 117) requires the state to provide suitable shelters for pets in the event of a disaster. This measure directs the Governor to prescribe rules establishing criteria for accommodating pets in public emergency shelters. The bill also requires the director of civil defense to identify suitable public shelter locations and private pet shelters.
