Avian Disaster Preparedness Tips
- Plan ahead. You do not want to be running round at the last minute.
- Transportation:
- Have a solid, clean, durable (hard plastic or metal, not cardboard), portable carrier.
- Identification:
- Microchip all birds that are large enough.
- Keep microchip contact info up to date with Hawaii Humane Society
- Have a current close-up photo of pet.
- Consider having a photo of you with your pet to assist proof of ownership.
- Food and Water:
- Have one to two weeks supply secured in sturdy, leak proof containers.
- Make sure food and water bowls in cage are durable (plastic/steel, not ceramic)
- Additional Items:
- Medications with clear labels and directions.
- Towels are useful for covering the cage and patient restraint.
- Newspaper and garbage bag to keep things as clean as possible.
- Patient care:
- Keep wings trimmed when possible to reduce escape risk.
- Locations:
- Keep birds in well ventilated, climate controlled areas when possible.
- Keep away from generators; birds are very sensitive to fumes and smoke.
