Avian Disaster Preparedness Tips

  • Plan ahead.  You do not want to be running round at the last minute.
  • Transportation:
    • Have a solid, clean, durable (hard plastic or metal, not cardboard), portable  carrier.
  • Identification:
    • Microchip all birds that are large enough.
    • Keep microchip contact info up to date with Hawaii Humane Society
    • Have a current close-up photo of pet.
    • Consider having a photo of you with your pet to assist proof of ownership.
  • Food and Water:
    • Have one to two weeks supply secured in sturdy, leak proof containers.
    •    Make sure food and water bowls in cage are durable (plastic/steel, not    ceramic)
  • Additional Items:
    • Medications with clear labels and directions.
    • Towels are useful for covering the cage and patient restraint.
    • Newspaper and garbage bag to keep things as clean as possible.
  • Patient care:
    • Keep wings trimmed when possible to reduce escape risk.
  • Locations:
    • Keep birds in well ventilated, climate controlled areas when possible.
    • Keep away from generators; birds are very sensitive to fumes and smoke.
